This is part of the Celebrations Blog Hop 2021 (#CBH2021) and this time I have created a pattern for a pieced PARTY CROWN. Just select the fabrics depending on the occasion you are celebrating; or make lots of them and turn it into a quilt full of crowns in all possible colours.
In line with the other blocks in the Celebration Blog Hop 2021, once sewn together, you’ll have a 12.5″ (12″ finished) block.

Materials needed
- PARTY CROWN instructions below (or download the PDF from UKQU Merchandise or my own shop to keep for later)
- One fabric for the crown
- One fabric for the jewels
- Background fabric
Cutting instructions

Preparing the pieces
Jewel and Crown HSTs
- Take one Crown and one Jewel 3″ x 3″ squares.
- Place them right sides together. Sew all around, 1/4″ from the edge.
- Once sewn, cut diagonally to create four HSTs in one go.
- Trim to 1.5″ x 1.5″.
- Repeat with the other Crown and Jewel 3″ x 3″ squares.
- You’ll end up with a total of eight (8) HSTs with Crown and Jewel fabrics, all measuring 1.5″ x 1.5″ after trimming.

Crown and Background HSTs
- Take one Crown and one Background 3″ x 3″ squares.
- Place them right sides together. Sew all around, 1/4″ from the edge.
- Once sewn, cut diagonally to create four HSTs in one go.
- Trim to 1.5″ x 1.5″.
- Repeat with the other Crown and Background 3″ x 3″ squares.
- You’ll end up with eight (8) HSTs with Crown and Background fabrics.
Creating the crown
Take your created HSTs and lay out according to the diagram below;

Creating the top row of the crown
- Take one Crown and Background HST and sew to one 2.5″ x 1.5″ background piece (this is the left side of the crown).
- Take two Crown and Background HSTs and sew them together with the Crown fabrics touching fully (this is the middle of the crown).
- Take one 2.5″ x 1.5″ background piece and sew it to one Crown and Background HST (this is the right side of the crown).
Creating the jewels (rows 2 and 3)
- Take two Jewel and Crown HSTs and sew them together with the Jewel fabrics touching fully.
- Repeat with the rest of the Jewel and Crown HSTs so you have four half jewels.
- You’ll end up with one full jewel and two half jewels.
- Take two of the half jewels and sew them together to create the middle full jewel.
- You’ll end up with one full jewel and two half jewels.

Creating the in-between pieces (rows 2 and 3)
- Take two Crown and Background HSTs and sew them together with the Background fabrics touching fully.
- Take one of the 2.5″ x 1.5″ Crown pieces and sew it to the HSTs just sewn together, making sure the Crown fabrics are touching fully.
- Repeat for the other in-between area.
Sewing together the jewels and the in-between pieces (rows 2 and 3)
Lay out the pieces and then sew together as per the diagram, ensuring you have the right order of all pieces; left half jewel, in-between, full jewel, in-between and right half jewel.

Finishing the crown
- Take the top row of the crown and sew to the two rows with jewels (rows 2 and 3).
- Finally, sew the 8.5″ x 1.5″ Crown piece to the bottom of the crown (row 4).

Finalising the block
Now, all that remains is to add the sides, top and bottom background pieces around the crown that you’ve just made.

Adding the background pieces
- Take the 4.5″ x 2.5″ Background pieces and sew one to each side of the crown.
- Take one 12.5″ x 4.5″ Background rectangle and sew it above the crown.
- Take the second 12.5″ x 4.5″ Background rectangle and sew it below the crown.

Hope you enjoyed this pattern!

Love it Nina, easy to narrow the top and bottom background to use as a border block too.
