One of my FAVOURITE things about patchwork and quilting is the community – quilters are such a lovely bunch, there is always some kind of swap, quilt along, charity quilt, sew along, community project going on, we just can’t help but be involved and I love that.

So I was thrilled to be included in this years Summer Sew-a-Row Quilt! Each row has been designed by a different designer, there is a mix of techniques in this quilt including traditional piecing, applique and FPP – you can see what our finished sample looks like above, isn’t it fab?

Now it’s no secret that I love scraps – if you’ve read any of my other blog posts here or on That’s Sew Kerry you’ll know they feature a lot and that no scrap gets left behind, regardless of how small it may be! It was working on one such project that I had the idea to make my block for the sew-a-row scrap friendly and if I could find away to include my current love of Log Cabin it would be even better.

I started by playing around with some scraps that were next to me, freshly trimmed off another project, with no real plan of what I was doing and made this initial log cabin block. Looking at it and thinking about summer and summer quilt blocks I thought it could possibly pass for a snail shell and voila! Summertime Snails was born.

A little bit of quilt maths later and I had a head and body worked out, so set about attaching everything to see how it looked.

Shelley was the first one I made (above), in order to make my row the correct size I made her some friends – Sally, Sophia and Gert! Don’t they look so cute strolling along the garden wall together?

I really hope you love making your scrappy summer snails as much as I loved making mine! Be sure to check out the other fabulous blocks on offer as part of our sew-a-row, you can find Row One here each designer has a link to their FREE pattern available.
