When choosing wadding or batting we all have our favourites. One of mine was the 279 80/20 from Vlieseline, a well established, reliable company which has been around for years producing many different products.

For those who are perhaps newer to quilting, the 80 20 stands for the mix of fibres used in production – 80% cotton and 20% polyester. This makes for a medium weight, luxuriously soft sew in wadding which has a beautiful drape. This is something that we can forget about – what will the quilt look like when finished? I love a soft drape, something that hangs softly, draping and moulding over the sofa/legs…

Vlieseline Soft Cotton Mix 279 80 20 Wadding

Vlieseline sent me some of their new 279 80 20 to trial and it certainly is a good replacement to their original 279. The extra width of this wadding, it is 244cm (96″) wide, is perfect and more cost effective for larger quilts. It can also be using in clothing and, at this time of year, would make a lovely lining in a coat or jacket to add an extra layer of insulation.

Recommended quilting distance is 20cm (8”) and is suitable for hand or machine quilting. So, what did I use it for?

I recently held a charity quilt day at Strictly Quilting HQ which will feature in a future blog and needed wadding for the quilt I’d made so this seemed a perfect opportunity to trial it. The wadding is an off-white colour and is washable at 30°. It also has a RRP price of £12.99 a metre which is certainly value for money considering the extra width.

But how did it quilt? I was quilting by domestic machine and, as I needed to finish the quilt quickly, I decided on straight line, Walking Foot quilting. Simple, quick and suitable for the scrap busting crumb piecing blocks I’d used.

Lovely Soft Drape

The thread was 50 cotton in a light, variegated grey. Again, matched quite nicely the green/blue colour palette I’d opted for. The quilting went very well, nicely through with no bearding. The drape when finished was lovely, not too soft or too hard and overall I was very pleased with the result.

I can certainly recommend this updated version of Vlieseline Soft Cotton Blend 279 80 20 wadding.
