In January 2018 we set a challenge to the Six Administrators of UK Quilters United to choose a quilt from the ones the members posted onto the Facebook group feed.

They were transferred to Competition Corner and throughout February people are voting for their favourites.

This is the story of Samantha’s Quilt

After finishing a Minecraft quilt for my son and a Peter Pan quilt for my daughter in 2015, I wanted to design and make a quilt about something I loved. It didn’t take me long to decide on my subject matter as I have been a huge Harry Potter fan since I was a teenager.

I spent the summer thinking of my favourite scenes, quotes and images from the books and films, and I made small doodles and sketches representing each one. Then I got bored and put them in a drawer!

Fast forward to 2017, and after finishing Elizabeth Hartmen’s Forest Fancy quilt, I picked up my drawings and spent the year bringing my ideas to life. It was a great scrap buster as I was able to mostly use bits and pieces from my scrap box, other than a few metres of white cotton for the background. Once I pieced all the whites blocks together, I added black sashing and I picked a purple fabric as a border. I FMQ’ed different designs into the blocks and borders  using  Gutermann variegated threads.

It was very liberating to just make it up as I went along and I am very happy with the outcome.
