Here at UKQU HQ we are really excited to have Diane Rooney, one of the brightest new designers to join Makower joining Blogger Central. In between designing and looking after her family, and working alongside her partner in their own design Studio she happily agreed to introduce herself. Living in Cornwall it just had to be all about the seaside too.
Designing fabric is a dream come true for me. I’ve been working in the craft & hobby industry for the past 15yrs or so as a freelance digital content designer, primarily creating graphics for craft software and digital scrapbooking kits. My designs were used to create greeting cards, scrapbooks and other paper craft projects. My work has been on Create & Craft TV and I’ve had the honour (and fun) to work on one of Kirstie Allsop’s craft shows.
As someone that’s always loved quilting and sewing, I often thought that my designs would work well as fabric. And so began my journey to become a fabric designer.
Every spare minute I had, I started building up a portfolio of designs until I felt confident enough to show my work. After a couple of meetings with the lovely people at Makower UK and attending a design meeting with them, I was beyond thrilled to start designing for them.
I believe that we are all creative in some way. I love that I can work in an industry where my work is used in various creative pursuits. My hope is that my fabric designs will inspire others in their own creative endeavours.
Although originally from London, I’ve had the opportunity to travel quite a bit and have lived in USA, Scandinavia and many parts of the UK. I’m now happily settled living in beautiful Cornwall where I was fortunate to spend most of my childhood. Living in Cornwall is a constant source of inspiration for my work along with the love of my family. I’m an empty nester with four grown up children and four grandchildren. A never ending supply of fun, laughter and inspiration. I work from home alongside my husband, Steve, also an artist and illustrator, running our little creative business, Stedi Arts Ltd.
Merryn Collection by Diane Rooney for Makower UK
Diane’s debut fabric collection for Makower UK is a playful and whimsical children’s novelty mermaid theme. Merryn was designed with her daughter and granddaughters in mind. The Little Mermaid being a much loved favourite book and film during her daughter’s childhood, and now with her granddaughters. Inspired by her love of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales and with a nod to the mermaid folklores in Cornwall, where Diane lives.
The origins of the name, Merryn, meaning “joy” and “born of the sea” seemed a perfect name for Diane’s first fabric collection. What little girl doesn’t want to be a mermaid at some point?!
“Always be yourself. Unless you can be a mermaid. Then always be a mermaid”!
