For the last few years. members of our Facebook group have been making A4 mini quilts which went on display at shows in South West. Since 2020 has turned out to be so… complicated, there are no shows on this year, and the group has been suspended indefinitely. We are hoping to come back to shows one day but in a different direction, so watch this space!

Since they can’t visit the shows, this is the last of the Gallery Group’s fabulous efforts.  There were three categories – ‘Where I Live’, ‘Under the Sea Hoops’ and ‘Wonky Houses’. In previous years the minis were taken to the shows for the year and then swapped around before being returned and you had no idea which one you’d get back, but this time they will all be returned to their makers. It means the designs are all something the makers personally would want to keep and shows us a little of themselves.

Here’s all the entries, with quotes from a few of the makers.

Cerne Abbas Giant by Brenda Franklin

“The Cerne Abbas Giant is thought to be a fertility symbol from the late 1600’s. Situated above the village of Cerne Abbas about 6 miles north of Dorchester in Dorset. He is a 180ft chalk man with a 35ft private part!

I chose him to represent Dorset as I wanted to make you all smile.. made from cotton with a thin poly wadding. Chain stitched outlined in perle then machine echo quilted.”

Sandpipers by Ren Redgrave.

“The Sandpipers and part of the sea behind them is a machine embroidery design which I loved and purchased from Urban Threads. The sand area I made from dying calico with coffee and the coffee grounds seem to give the fabric a textured effect in some areas, which I found interesting. The rest of the blue sea is made up of strips of fabric and quilted over. I had tried and wanted to learn joining curves for the sea area, but sadly failed at the attempt, so the sea is just strips and quilting to form a watery effect.”

‘Under the Sea’ entries

Mermaid by Heather Duddles

“The under the sea hoop was my first attempt using my inktense pencils, I also used machine embroidery and applique for the 3D effect on the corals, for a bit of sparkle I applied an iridescent fabric glitter glue to the mermaid tail.”

Gulliver by Judith Clarke

“They are my own designs including my alter ego Gulliver. They are appliqué with free motion stitching using my drawings as inspiration. One has Gulliver swimming under water checking out his under water friends, in the other he’s floating in his life buoy boat. All the fabrics are either up cycled or from my stash.”
