For November we are going to read ‘Twelve Golden Threads: Lessons for successful living from Grama’s quilt‘ by Aliske Webb.
Using quilting as a metaphor, the book sets out twelve lessons for a successful and fulfilling life. The story is told by Angela, the mother of Jennifer and Susan. Jennifer and Susan are young adults at the early stages of their career. Jennifer wants to make lots of money whereas her sister is aiming for a teaching career. Enter their grand mother and the sisters start making their first quilts, at the same time as they learn important life skills from their beloved Grama.
For those who has read self-help or management books, much of the content will be familiar, although it is now told in the context of quilt making. The book carefully avoids the typical buzzwords from management speak, but instead uses the various steps of quit making as the thread throughout.
This book should be equally enjoyable a read to the young as the old quilter. Depending on your background and stage in life, you may enjoy it as a pure fiction book or as a tongue-in-cheek self-help book bringing clarity to the more typical buzz word bingo used in many management books.
If you enjoy this book, Webb has written a few others (all with a different theme / learning), including Murder at the Quilt Show, Scrap Quilt Memories: A Heroine’s Journey, The Phoenix Quilt and The Fragile Thread.
