For October we are going to read “Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty, a Slave, and Four Years in the White House”, which was written by Elizabeth Keckley.

The book was originally written in 1868, yes, over 150 years ago!

Keckley re-tells her life story from enslavement in Virginia and North Carolina to her time as seamstress to Mary Todd Lincoln in the White House. The early parts of her life were filled with everyday struggles, which will seem alien to us today in the United Kingdom. Through determination and hard work as a seamstress she manages to purchase freedom for herself and her son.

The book provides a personal look into the White House and the Lincoln family during a very turbulent time.

Sometimes the best histories are not in the history books!
