Block 4 is: Woven Ribbons

There are many variations of the Woven Ribbons quilt block, and like many others, it has been around since the 1800’s. It is made up of squares and rectangular strips and only has one specific matching point, but it will help with getting those pesky quarter inch seams on track! This is another ‘first’ for me too.

There are lots of pics to follow in this blog rather than written instructions, just to get you used to seeing patterns written differently but achieving the same outcome. Don’t panic as I have written more instructions for the blocks yet to come!

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

REMEMBER: Sew all seams for this block at 0.25” (¼“).

STEP 1:

Lay out the blocks as shown below.

STEP 2:

Start by sewing the following 3.5” x 3.5” squares together: Yellow and Grey, Blue and Grey, Red and Grey, Green and Grey: check if any have directional fabric as you might want them to run in the same direction in your block (see Red and Green in the layout). PRESS open.

STEP 3:

Now attach the 3.5” x 6.5” rectangular strips as shown. It helps to sew them in a methodical sequence as shown in the layout.

PRESS open.

STEP 4:

Layout the blocks again as shown and sew the top two units together. PRESS open.

STEP 5:

Sew the bottom two units together. PRESS open.

STEP 6:

Flip the top half 180⁰ over to the bottom half. Align the centre seam/points and PIN for accuracy. Sew together using a 0.25” seam. PRESS open.

Voila, you’ve made your fourth block!
