These instructions will make you a pair of stands. They will carry two big quilts or with extra tabs a good number of smaller quilts. My husband made these for Beacon Quilts this year and they worked very well. They are his own design (he is a cabinet maker) so if you have any problems just contact me and I will get him to answer any questions.
We got the Aluminium from Metals4U.co.uk we have no affiliation with this company. Halving joint image taken from Wikipedia.
Requirements list
5 x 2.4 meter lengths of timber 37mm square
1 meter of Box Aluminium 44.5mm square (one meter will make five stands but this is how it is sold)
2 x 2.4 meter length lengths of timber 50mm by25mm (These are the cross bars if you are making a double hanging you will of course need 4 of these)
30cm of 2.5cms webbing (the type we use for bag handles) for each loop we put four on the top of each stand you can also put another four on half way down to create a double hanging.
16 x 25mm screws
2 x 75mm screws
50mm pins (pin gun)
Fold over caps
Wood glue
This cutting diagram may help you but I have described in throughout the instructions

To start plain all the 37mm square timber and make sure it fits inside the aluminium box.
From the 37mm square timber cut two pieces 2.1 meter long these are the uprights.
To make the base
From one 2.4 meter length of timber cut four pieces 600mm long. These are for the base cross.

Cut a halving joint to allow these two pieces of timber to fit together to make the cross.

From a 2.4 meter length cut two pieces 400mm long, these are for the base uprights. Glue and push together the halving joint then drill a hole in the centre up through both and screw (75mm screw)the 400mm piece of wood so that it is square with the cross.

Cut four pieces from the 37mm square timber to 380mm long these are then to be cut at a 45 degree angle at either end.

Glue and pin these from each foot to the upright ensuring the upright is square with the foot as illustrated in the picture above.
From off cuts make a 15mm foot to fit on the base pin and glue into place. This helps with uneven floors.

Cut aluminium to 200mm long pieces. Drill a hole on each side 40mm up from one edge.

From the top of the 400mm up-stand on the base measure 70mm down and square a line around. Insert the aluminium over the top of the stand down to the line and fix with a screw (25mm) on each side. This is one base complete now make another one!
For the Upright
From the top of the post draw a line 140mm and square around. Fold webbing in half and place the fold on the line, fix with a screw (25mm) 25mm from the top and cover with a cap. Trim excess webbing and repeat all the way around. You can also add extra tabs further down to make the double hangers.

Cross Bars
Cut to length required (we did seven foot) Plain to take the edges off to ensure no snagging on the quilts/sleeve.
These stands are versatile as you can keep them as just two stands together for a front and back or you can make a U shapes with three stands which is what we did down the isles of the church. If you do this you will require a lot more cross bars, but then it does hold a lot more quilts.
Have fun and let me know if anyone makes these stands.
