I heard about cancelled shows and change of direction in the UK. Let’s have a look at the situation in the Netherlands.

This week we received the, to me shocking, news the planned yearly General Exhibition of the Dutch Quiltersgilde was cancelled!

De Algemene Tentoonstelling 2019 gaat helaas niet door

Their reason: ” We want to let you know that this has been a very difficult decision for us, which came about after months of searching for a suitable location, which is large enough for more than 200 quilts and shops. A location that is affordable and easily accessible. The costs of organizing the General Exhibition are getting higher and the number of visitors is getting lower and lower. The result is that the costs increase, but the income decreases. “

This is is the second much loved quilt show that’s been cancelled in a little more than a year’s time. The first one to be cancelled was OEQC, the Open European Quilt Championships in October 2017.

The brilliant thing about these shows was that individuals could enter their quilts for a large national exhibition. Both shows had selection criteria but these were merely based on volume in a specific category. Novice as well as more experienced quilters could enter. There are no other opportunities left to enter as an individual other than in some juried Challenges, which is not everybody’s cup of tea.

On a different note there are some quilt shows left like

Quilt Festival Noord-Groningen on June 12-14 2019, which will have exhibitions in different rural locations.

Patchwork&Quiltdagen Rijswijk on April 11-13 2019, with exhibitions of Quilt Artists, workshops and a vendors market.

I am very proud to be one of the exhibiting artists with 10 of my coats, of which 3 have never been shown in the Netherlands! I will also teach a workshop there every afternoon.

Besides quilt shows there are many other exhibitions around Textiles in the Netherlands. It seems to me there is a bit of a shift going on to a broader approach towards textile art and crafts.
