Autumn medallion

Hi! I want to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my quilting journey. I’ve been quilting for about 50 years. (That was such a scary number to write). I’ve seen changes in what we do, how we do it, what’s available to us, and I’m so excited with the way quilting has exploded.

We now have such a community of quilters from all over the world. Quilters are art quilters, modern quilters, fussy cutters, traditional quilters. Wow, we have it all. And what a joy it is to share our craft and our art.

I’m a New Zealander by birth and met my (Australian) husband in Papua New Guinea where I was teaching. I loved it. We had butterfly hand crank machines and nothing like a rotary cutter, but I still had a quilting group with the girls. This was our first quilt. We raffled it to get money to buy fabric so each girl could make her own quilt.

After four years in New Guinea, we came to Australia where I was working as a teacher linguist in an Aboriginal community in the Kimberley. From there we moved to New South Wales, Queensland, back to NSW and then to the Territory. This quilt is of Edith Falls in the Northern Territory and was made as a fractured picture with a group of friends.

Having children at school stopped our wanderings and we settled in northern NSW close to the coast and the surfing beaches. This is my Road Home I designed for a blog hop last year. This is home, lots of surfers, pandanus trees, pelicans and whales.

I love all sorts of quilting: geometric, applique, traditional and modern. I’m loving pattern designing using EQ8 and Geogebra, and I’m trying to expand my skills in every area. Recently I purchased a second hand long arm, and I’m looking forward to the holidays to have some more time to play and practise.

I’m hoping to share with you a flavour of life in Australia and bring you photos from exhibitions and shop reviews.

I’m also keen to share English paper piecing patterns from the King George Quilt that hangs in the V&A. With the launch of the UKQU website, I”m really looking forward to an exciting year.
