For this block I decided to work away from the more usual squares, and there are two variations – either make some of each or choose which you prefer. These make super borders for all sorts of quilts…
Cut
For each block
One piece 6-1/2 by 2 inches in background fabric
One 2-inch square in colour
For straight-set blocks, cut one piece 1-1/2 by 7 inches and one piece 2-1/2 by 7 inches

For wonky blocks, cut two pieces 2-1/2 by 7 inches

Cut your 6-1/2 inch piece in half, straight across but in a random place at least 1 inch from the end. Cut each strip in a different place as you make these, this makes the stones float…

Sew each of these two pieces you have just cut to opposite sides of your 2-inch square; press to the darker fabric

Sew a 2-1/2 inch and a 1-1/2 inch piece (or two 2-1/2s) to either side – these will be a little short, so line up at one end.

Press outwards. Trim the blocks to 6-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches – for straight blocks, align with the inner seams, for wonky blocks, set the ruler at an angle..

I made some straight, some wonky, and some with coloured grounds and white stones. I also made a couple with scrappy centres, just because I can…

Nice for borders…
