Skilful Skyful is a series of tutorials which gradually teach traditional block patchwork stitched on the sewing machine.

Each instalment introduces a new technique, and includes full instructions for two 12″ blocks; one easy, and one more difficult, so that you can practice and develop your skills. You could combine the finished blocks into a Sampler Quilt.

The instructions are full of Carolyn’s extra tips for achieving perfect results, and link to pages on this website with photographs and videos.

This block, Ribbon Star is the more challenging block in the fourth instalment: square-in-a-square units
It is a good skill builder, as it includes a Square-in-a-Square unit, and Flying Geese units.

If you would prefer to start with a more basic block, Mrs Brown’s Choice also uses square-in-a-square units.
