Hey all

I recently went on a half-day course teaching Free Motion Machine Embroidery. Although I have been using sewing machines for at least 25 years (probably more like 30!) I have never used it for anything other than sewing. I recently tried free motion quilting and didn’t totally suck, so when the opportunity to go on this course came up I thought it would be fun.

So of I went. We were asked to bring a picture with us of  a landscape or building we wanted to replicate. As some of my regular readers may know, I live in the mountains so I chose a view of the very mountain I live on, Manod Bach.

One of the things I found liberating was that unlike other forms of machine sewing tension problems can be used to your advantage. When sewing “normally”, a problem with tension means a half-hour head scratching while you work out exactly what is wrong. However, when free-motion embroidering, you can use tension issues to develop different textures and patterns. How cool is that!

I got so into the session, I completely forgot to take photos. however, when I got home I took a work in progress picture.

Not bad so far huh… I was so buoyed by the morning efforts, I went up into my craft studio and finished it off.

I am totally hooked. I’m now planning my next picture. May be the view from my studio window. As John Denver sang, “Country Road, Take me home, to the place I belong”
