Hello and welcome back to the UKQU Sewing Challenge where we are using our patchwork and quilting skills to create garments, accessories, things for the home and perhaps also something for charity. Please read on to find out what the second challenge is.
For our end of summer / early autumn challenge I am keen to see your take on “wrapping up summer”. Below are three free patterns which fit the “wrapping up” theme to hopefully inspire you to get creative.
The three patterns are slightly different to each other and two of them don’t even need a printer; just tape measure, paper and pen! For a warmer option, you could make the wrap in fleece; fleece is very forgiving so may be a good option if you’re not used to making garments.
- Self drafted jacket / kimono from The Polkadot Chair, best made in light weight fabrics to get a nice drape, https://www.polkadotchair.com/sew-kimono-top/
- Simple, thicker kimono / wrap style jacket from Rags to Couture, you could repurpose an old blanket for this one, http://ragstocouture.com/kimono-jacket-diy-tutorial/
- Simple “coatigan” from SEW, the sewing magazine (free registration needed, but it also gives you access to LOADS of other patterns), https://www.sewmag.co.uk/free-sewing-patterns/shauna-coatigan
If neither of these take your fancy, there are LOADS of patterns available online (paid and free) and in various magazines and books, or ask in one of our Facebook groups (see below).
To add that patchwork / quilting twist, please remember to include some type of patchwork/quilting element; it could be as simple as a patchwork pocket or perhaps a statement quilt block on the back. Alternatively, go all out and create that quilted jacket that you have been thinking of for a while after seeing some amazing ones in our Facebook group and on other sites.
Join in the discussion
Please do share your tips and ideas, as well as what you are making on Facebook. You’re welcome to use both our main group, UK Quilters United and our the dedicated UKQU Sewing Challenge (links below). If you add #ukquSewingChallenge to your posts in the main group, it’ll be easier for everyone to find them, but don’t worry as I can add topics/hashtags if you forget.
Feel free to join in when you have time; this is all about making something else than quilts and having some fun. Also, please remember, you’re keeping what you’re making, so there is no pressure to be done at a specific time, although I’ll be sharing a new challenge in the autumn.
