Hello there,

I’m Helen Howes, and this is by way of an Introduction and thanks-for-letting-me-play.

I’ve been a quilter for over 20 years, but I’ve been sewing for a whole lot longer – I have been a dressmaker, soft-furnisher, kite-maker (one of the best in the world) and maker-of-stuff-to-sell for more than 50 years. I have always sewn, it’s obsessive, and I fidget if I can’t.. I also mend old sewing machines…

A few years ago, I fell madly in love with Modern Quilting, and as I wanted to encourage people to quilt, to sew, to enjoy, to give, and to make nice things for love, I made a Modern Quilt specialist group within The Quilters’ Guild. It was certainly needed. It’s been fun, but now my term of office is done, and I have a little more time to Make, and Sew, and Design.. And blog…

I would like to make a series about Improv Blocks – is this something you might like to see? I also tend to philosophise, as I think Why is almost as important as What…

And Ancient? Well, the image shows my friend and co-conspirator Heather Hasthorpe, at Harrogate a couple of years ago – you will note that on the table is an Old Black Singer. I have taken these everywhere with Modern – they are easy to carry, great talking-points (“my mum had one of those”) and need no power. I have made lots and lots and lots of demo blocks on these at all sorts of small and large events, and had lots of fun..

Keep on sewing the fabrics together…

HH

I really like your quilt designs! I’ve just searched and found the magazine with your sailboat quilt design in it, Goodness knows why I didn’t buy it at the time! I bet a series about improv blocks would be inspirational!
