Product Review – Gütermann Creativ Bulky Lock 80 – Variegated purple (9944), 1000m (1094 yds)

The package arrived, was it something else for the magazine? No, this one was for me to try out. I do a little dressmaking on the odd occasion so when UKQU asked for volunteers to try Gütermann Creativ Bulky Lock I put my name forward.

I opened the pack and found that the colour was rich, shiny and luscious but somewhat darker than I thought from the brochure. I do prefer choosing thread in a shop rather than online as you can never quite tell the true colour. I decided that it would still work with the top I had already cut out, I carried on. The fabric I was using was mid-weight jersey in a lovely dusky pink with a twig/dot pattern across it. I had chosen a simple pattern for a top for the office, a quick make I hoped.

My overlocker is an old one. A Huskylock 540. Brute of a machine, so heavy and had spent most of its life at a school. I had bought it from a friend (thanks, Veronica) who had it tucked away herself for over ten years. When I got it I did have it serviced and it is serving me very well for the minimal overlocking I do. Now to thread it! I only use three spools for this machine and it’s not so bad, follow the instructions on the machine and voila, I’m off.

Overlocked seam

he thread seemed quite soft in hand, not tightly wound as I normally deal with and on the trial piece I sewed, seemed to work very well. The colouration was lovely, I really like that and it would certainly be excellent for decorative finishing rather than being on the inside. The thread, being 100% polyester, is very strong and I’m sure will last without breaking on the stretchy seems. The reels are certainly long enough to ensure that you would get plenty of items made from each and I am keen now to try and use it for decorative stitching which, as this thread is variegated, looks fabulous. Overall I love this thread and would buy again in the future.
