The lovely people are Barnyarns sent UKQU this fabulous box of Madeira Embroidery threads for review.  I was lucky to be chosen to review these gorgeous threads.  Don’t they look sumptuous, I’ve tried to capture the sheen and glitz of these rayon and metallic threads.

The box not only includes threads, it also contained a spool of bobbin thread, and a packet of needles, everything you need.

You have 14 Madeira Rayon 40 threads, 3 Madeira Metallic 40 threads, one Madeira Bobbinfil 70, and a pack of 5 Schmetz 90/14 needles.  The thread reels are 200m, and the bobbinfil is 500m.  Also included is a shade card, information on threads, and a conversion chart for converting other makes of thread to Madeira.

I had to try these out on black fabric to make them really pop, and so you could see how bright they are.  I knew I wanted to make an A5 book cover for my Diary as it’s the start of the year, and I’m going to use a diary purely for recording my sewing.  I wound some bobbins with the bobbin thread, and loaded up the machine file to the embroidery machine and it sewed like a dream.

First up was the yellow and green, this was for the back of the cover.

Then I tried the blue on the spine, and lastly the pinks for the front, I also added a fastener, and used the black on the tab and the making up.  For the front of the cover I decided to change to the Top Stitch needle (generally this would just be used for the metallic thread on the embroidery machine), and I really think the machine was quieter whilst sewing – so this is something I’m going to explore, to see if it was just my imagination.

Then I needed to try out the metallics, now the light really bounces off these, so very difficult to photograph as my camera found it difficult to focus.

These threads aren’t only for an embroidery machine though, you can use them perfectly with an ordinary sewing machine.  If your machine has embroidery stitches, then these threads will be perfect for adding that finishing touch.  Even if your machine only does straight stitch, these are great for adding a bit of colour, and even metallic straight stitch can change the look of your project.

So what do I think about this box of threads.  I think that Barnyarns are onto a winner here.  To include machine needles and bobbin thread in the box with the threads is a brilliant idea.  The box is currently priced at £24.99, and you can purchase it here.  This represents fantastic value, to purchase all of these individually from Barnyarns the contents would cost you £49.86!  Now I’ve rechecked this, thinking I must have made a mistake – but no.  So basically you are getting this for nearly half price, and obviously you had the added value of the storage box.

I think if you sew, and want to try embroidery threads, then you shouldn’t hesitate at buying the box as it represents great value for money.
