Free, easy PDF pattern to download
Using a very basic block, which is also easy to piece together, and repeating it for a whole quilt can create a stunning end result with minimum fuss and stress. This free quilt uses strips from three different solid fabrics to create a striking quilt, but you could also make it from scrappy fabrics creating a completely scrappy look. Alternatively sort your scraps into three colours or tones to achieve a more structured look.
More than one Rail Fence
Did you know the actual Rail Fence block consists of FOUR strips sewn together? I didn’t! Luckily I did a search online before naming this pattern and amended the name accordingly.
The block consisting of just two rectangular pieces in each sub-block is usually referred to as Streak of Lightning (or Endless Stair) block.
Using three rectangular pieces in each sub-block and you need to refer to the block as a Roman Square.
Finally, the block with four strips, is the one which is actually called Rail Fence.
