Welcome back, you’ve made your first Block: 9-Patch so now we are making:

Block 2: Patience Corner

There is more piecing involved in this block as it is made up of squares and rectangular strips, but very little matching of points. This block has been around since the 1890’s and there are several variations on the design. It’s the first time I’ve made this block so here goes!  This is what it looks like when it’s finished!

UNFINISHED Size: 12.5” x 12.5”

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1:

Take a Yellow 4.5” x 4.5” square and sew a 2.5” x 4.5” Red rectangle strip to one side using a 0.25” (¼”) seam. PRESS.

Make two of these units. Leave these on one side for the time being.

STEP 2:

Take another Yellow 4.5” x 4.5” square and sew one Green 2.5” x 4.5” rectangular strip to one side using a 0.25” seam. PRESS.

STEP 3:

Flip this over so the Green is on the left and sew another Green 2.5” x 4.5” rectangular strip to the other side using a 0.25” seam. Make two of these units. PRESS.

STEP 4:

Take one of the Yellow/Green units and sew a Red 2.5” x 8.5” rectangular strip onto one edge using a 0.25” seam. PRESS.

Repeat with the other Yellow/Green unit so you have 2 of these. PRESS.

STEP 5:

Lay out your blocks as shown below:-

STEP 6:

Lay out one of your Yellow/Green/Red units with the Red across the bottom RS facing up.

Align and PIN a Red/Yellow unit to the Right, RS facing down. Sew a 0.25” seam. PRESS.

Repeat in the same way with the other units to make two.

STEP 7:

Lay out the pieces as shown. There is just one matching point in this block indicated by the arrow.

STEP 8:

Flip the top piece over 180⁰ so both are RS facing together (see Green and Orange dots). Align and PIN. Sew a 0.25” seam. PRESS open.

Voila you’ve made your second block!

Well done.

It should measure 12.5 inches x 12.5 inches.

If your block measures less than this, then try this:

PRESS again using the steam function on your iron.

If not, then it’s possible that your 0.25” seam is slightly off. Check the seams, are they wider than 0.25”? If so, can you unpick them and restitch them? Don’t worry too much at this stage as we will be sashing the blocks together later and your accuracy will get better the more blocks you make.

So, ready for the next one? Block 3: Confetti

Coming soon …. Block 4: Woven Ribbon, Block 5: Cabin in the Cotton
