Love it.
I always think that another thing worth thinking about is “does my comment read the same way as it sounds in my head?”. In other words, a comment where you can hear and see the comment being said – maybe with a smile – sometimes sounds quite different when just written down.
I am guilty of over using emojis for that reason….. -

Nice blog – good to be reminded that log cabins aren’t just squares!

Every year we who blog (often called the Bloggerati for some reason) meet up at a location near to Birmingham for a weekend in November, times allowing, and just sew (and eat). I was extremely lucky to be given a 5…

We do indeed.
I found that, by following the adage “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” and actually tackling the project in smaller chunks eg concentrating on cutting one colour at a time, sewing one colour at a time etc I stopped procrastinating and started doing. -

The retreat was an absolute godsend – without it and the people on it, I would not be sewing now.

Thank you. It is the ideal sort of quilt for me and my granddaughter to snuggle under. The size of it, we could have the whole street snuggling under it!

My sewing has been in the doldrums for months and months – a combination of a lack of enthusiasm, a lack of inspiration and a 9 month old granddaughter (who is wonderful!). My sewjo had gone completely AWO…

It looks fabulous Cheryl. Pleased your sewjo is back!

I was lucky enough to be given a part layer cake, asked to make use of it and tell you what I think.
But I had never used a layer cake before – so what to do?
The fabric was Tranquility by Makower UK. The p…

Lovely blog. It is interesting how we all come at this from different places.
I must say, though, that the thing that has been a revelation to me from patchworking is the rotary cutter – I use it for almost everything! -

I have avoided flying geese until now because all of the sensible methods I could see were either a) too hard or b) too wasteful. This ruler appears to eliminate both.
Oh dear – my bank balance!
Thanks for the clear description. -

Thank you. In truth, it was good to look back at where and how I started. My problem with this blog was where to stop. I wanted to give all the advice without it being overwhelming!
I nearly did it in separate Learn and Need sections, then I realised that would end up explaining things multiple times if I did it that way!
Glad you approve. Xx -

This was a really useful read Cheryl, it reminded me of things that I had learnt and then forgotten. The tips are useful and I wish I had read something like this when I first started my journey 4 years ago, before I convinced myself that I needed everything that had the word ‘quilting’ on it and now sits untouched in my sewing room!

I had a grand idea – I decided I was going to make a HST (half square triangle) quilt.
I knew I wanted to make it a blue and white quilt. I saw a stunning range of fabric (Shibori II by Moda). I knew this would b…

A very interesting review Cheryl. I must admit that I have not used either of those rulers. They both look quite fiddly to use, especially the open slot one, and in my opinion and the price is quite off-putting! I have always used the Quilt in a Day square up ruler and find it so easy to use. You do have to place it on your sewn line and cut your triangle before ironing open, but it’s pretty fail safe. Can be used for HSTs up to 6 ½” and costs less than £10 from Amazon or slightly more expensive from Creative Grids.
-
It is really helpful to see how you fared with these two, without having yo buy them first: more pennies for fabric! Thank you.
-
Great blog, about technique and about equipment. Thanks for sharing your experiences of these two rulers.
-
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve not thought about rulers for this, I usually just use a 4.5″ square or I have larger if needed. Now, I’m wondering if I should buy something else? 😉

This lovely, sad story really touched me. Such a thoughtful lady to the end. And clearly treasured, as the quilt will be. Community is everything.

I can see a lot of traditional Welsh motifs in the quilting – and a lot of love for a special friend.

Wow what a read! I feel very emotional and what a lovely tribute to a dear friend. Fantastic story telling Cheryl and great blog.
