Like most of you we have spent the most of our time in the garden this summer and I thought I would share some photos with you.
This is one of our sunflowers which grew to 8′ tall, lucky to catch the bee c…

I’m not one to shy away from a challenge, and so I jumped at the chance to be part of the UKQU blog hop – especially when the theme was flowers. I instantly knew what flowers I would choose – tulip…

How many of us started our patchwork journey with making up hexagons? I know I did for one, many moons ago.
Hexagon quilts go back in history as far back to the 17th century.

Sunflowers are a particular favourite of mine, it just rings out ‘summer’ with their beautiful sunshine heads you could almost draw a smiley face on it. Who remembers Bill & Ben’s Little Weed? Not so much a weed…

It is a cheery block for these grey days.

Thankyou Maggie…sunshine flowers.x

This is such a bright and happy block. I love the design and wow- your sunflowers are so tall!! x
-
Another stunning block! I really like the 3D version you made originally, but not that practical in a quilt, is it?

Jo Hendy has a treat (or several) in store for quilters once again. I have tried hard to limit my Block of the Month (BOM) subscriptions, and I am a little ashamed to admit that I have some still waiting for me to…

Birdnesting…a term used when you start machining and the threads get tangled up underneath causing a birds nest of threads…so annoying! A simple way to avoid this is to hold both top & bottom threads firmly bef…

Christine Hutchins wrote a new post, How do you store yours? 5 years, 10 months ago
One of the questions I see often on various Facebook posts and pages is ‘How do you store your fabric?’. Then there are the posts that show how people have stored their fabric – you know the ones – those pictures app…

-
An organiser like me! Though I am very envious of your cupboard. It is very tidy!
-
Thank you Maggie – I am an organiser, but not when it comes to my scraps! And the cupboard looks tidy because I was searching for the missing block I mention in the blog and tidied it up; I found the block, but not in the cupboard at all!! The rest of my sewing room is not so tidy – but that is due to the amount of stuff in here. The sewing cupboard was certainly a worthwhile purchase 12 years ago.
-
-
I also use storage boxes for my fabric, separated into rough colour families. We deliberately bought a metal framed bed so that I could store the boxes underneath – keeps them out of the light to avoid fading
-
A good idea for keeping the boxes out of the light. I have quite a few of my boxes under my quilting frame.

So pretty! They would look gorgeous as log cabin block square centres, picking up the key shades from the embroidery in fabrics, too.
-
There’s an idea! I know that some people following the Stitch-Along have opted for this. As I want to do each block twice, I may decide to do log cabin for some of them.

I know how you feel, these challenges have made me want to try to do more pieces like this. Love the way you’ve finished it, I think I’ll have to try facings next time
-
Thank you Jane – and sorry for the late reply. I really like facings as a way to finish pieces, I’ve not done them often, but they are a great way to finish a piece that has a wavy edge.

What a fabulous blog! Not only do you show us your sketchbook, but the detail, the different processes you used are truly inspiring! Thank you!

Thank you Maggie! Sorry for the late reply. It is starting to dawn on me that maybe I may be some kind of artist after all!

Oh the memories came flooding back! I learned to sew on one of these, so when I went to secondary school and was confronted by a hand wheel Singer, it was a real step down from hands free!
I remember Mum changing the leather belt. It lived in an alcove by the hearth, so it was always available if you just lifted off the cover. She would only ever use 40 thread, but ours was a Jones. You can get a fair old speed going and it is a most satisfying noise!
