Until this challenge, I’d never really taken the time to stop and analyse song lyrics.  I just sang the songs and enjoyed the music and where Queen is involved, I just love it.  Although Bohemian Rhapsody has to be one of my all time favourites, I wasn’t disappointed to get Under Pressure.

My first action was to listen to the song and get it in my head.  I then looked up the lyrics and allowed them to permeate around my brain for a few days.  I just picked out a few lines to use in my quilt.

The lines I picked up on were-“People on the streets”, “Keep coming up with love but it’s so slashed and torn”, and of course, “Pressure”. I’ve printed the lyrics onto fabric and that forms part of the backing of this quilt.

I found a copyright free picture of people walking on a New York street and printed it onto fabric.  This lies under ‘love’ that is literally slashed and torn.  The arrows represent the pressure from all sides people are under.

To form ‘Love”, I drew the outline onto white fabric and coloured using fabric crayons.  Once the colour was fixed, I hand stitched around the letters using back stitch. It made the letters stand out.

For the arrows, I drew out and cut a plastic template and raided my scrap bag.  There was no planning as to the colours, if it was big enough, I used it.  They were randomly placed around and attached using raw edge appliqué.

It was only after all the arrows were attached, and the sewing complete that I tore into ‘Love”.  This is where the trusty seam ripper did it’s worst. I thought cutting was too clean and wouldn’t achieve a slashed appearance. Over time, I know this appear more worn, but I’m ok with that.  It will grow into the feel I wanted.

I’ve loved this challenge and with a, “that’s cool ” from both the boys, that’s praise enough for me.
