I have no sewing room, well I do. it’s just not usable I can’t get into it, it’s that cluttered and full I’m sure it will result in injury if I attempt to go in and do some sewing.
The reason for this untidy, unworkable place is all down to having an extension built, by building it would free up what was the dinning room and would become my new sewing room. But, alas, it has not run smoothly, the first date we had to build we ended up cancelling as it was to soon after getting a shared party wall agreement in place, we were due to have it done within 6 weeks but had to give the neighbours 12 weeks notice. The second date I cancelled 2 days prior to the build, a tale that would take forever to type and you to read. Our next date all booked in and along comes the first lock down. The fourth date, I was told by the builder if I didn’t go for what was being offered, September 2020, then I wouldn’t get another spot until the following year. The world and his wife are wanting all these builders after the lockdown, I wasn’t going to give a spot up for someone else to use and fortunately for us the builder had ordered all materials prior to lockdown so shortages were not a problem to our build.
Here we are all these months later, the extension is finished but my sewing room isn’t! It has now fortunately been started but is taking a long old time as the builder is trying to pop and do bits in between his other work. All furniture has been moved out and scattered in various spots around the house with a lot in my old sewing room, another reason as to not being able to get in there. To date the old French doors from the back of the house have been installed into the front of the house to ‘my’ room. The walls have all been plastered. Half the skirting has been fitted, I just need one final few hours from the builder for the skirting to be finished and the electrics to be completed.

Now with each time something is done I can see that it wont take much to get it all into a usable space and now the shops are back open I have found a couple of bits already in the charity shops that I can incorporate into the room. The lampshade £3.99, I’m thinking of finding a floor standing lamp to put this on and have close to my working area. The 3 button covered handles I’m hoping to find a piece of furniture to upcycle and use these on.

Until the time comes when I can sit nice and comfortable in front of my sewing machine with plenty of room then I shall just continue with the hand sewing bits that I have managed to squirrel out of my old room and tuck away in a drawer elsewhere when not stitching.

By the way the builder is my Son-in-law, I know how busy he is and every now and then if I offer to cook dinner it is a great ruse to get him to come and do a little bit more!
