Sew-a-row
Somewhere back in the mists of time a signed up to take part in a sew-a-row quilt based on a gardening theme. I was full of enthusiasm and spent a while thinking about the design of my row. I decided to do 4 blocks, one that represented something in the garden for each of the 4 seasons. (I have to say these things are not in my garden)
After much consideration this was the design I settled on.

I started with the crocus block, as I pieced it I measured each piece and made notes, I made the first block fairly quickly and was really pleased with it. I was off to a good start.
However, as usual life got in the way and I had to put the project on the back burner for a while. When I picked it up again I completely forgot about measuring my fabric pieces as I made the blocks. I finished the blocks fairly quickly and it wasn’t until I came to write the pattern that I couldn’t find any of the measurements I had written down for the first block and hadn’t written any at all for the other 3 blocks. I realised I had a problem. The only way I could do this was to measure each piece I also realised I had made life hard for my self by doing 4 different blocks.
I really didn’t relish the prospect of doing this, but I made a start and then life struck again this time in the form of gall stones. I was I’ll on and off between February last year and December. I had my gall bladder removed at beginning of December and silly me thought I would just be back to normal. It took a couple of months before I felt ready to sew again.
I decided to finish some of my UFO’s but completely forgot about this project until a few weeks back when I saw some posts on messenger. We were also going on holiday for 2 weeks so didn’t have much time to get the pattern and blog written.
We got back from holiday to be greeted with a letter from a power company thanking us for changing to them (we hadn’t) and bill from them demanding payment for a house we no longer own. To make matters worse
Because we hadn’t paid it within the requested 7 days a letter from a debt collection agency demanding immediate payment. As many of you probably know, dealing with these companys is a night mare. After several long phone calls and e-mails it has now been put on hold while they sort it out.
Then our bath sprung a leak and emptied into the downstairs flat, but to make matters worse we do not speak to the woman downstairs after several run ins over noise.
Then the internet went down for ten hours and the day after my computer needed up dating but I kept getting messages saying there were missing files so couldn’t run update as there were security issues. Not only would it not run updates it wouldn’t run anything else also blocked me out of my email completely. This took 2 days of messing about to solve.
So once again this was put on hold, hopefully I can finish this today 24/07 This did not happen as I had problems, I thought with the blog software, I couldn’t cut and paste or insert links. I later realised it was my mouse at fault, so am now using the one which came with my keyboard, until my new ergonomic one arrives.
I have just re-read this and it sounds like a list of students excuses for not doing their homework.
As an ex-teacher I wanted to write the pattern with the same detail I would use for my teaching handouts however, writing a pattern for a quilt is very different to writing handouts for accounting courses. I took the pragmatic approach and to do what I could in the time I had. Overall, I am not happy with the instructions for the blocks as they are very basic but I hope you will all forgive me as I have very little experience in writing quilting patterns and have a go at making the blocks. You can also use our page in messenger if you have any queries and I will do my best to answer them.
There are lots of tutorials on FPP on the internet and the links below are related blogs on the UKQU website also to the free block patterns.
