In 2020 the Quilters Guild challenge was to make a 20″ square quilt made up of 20 squares. in my mind this was somewhat ambiguous as I like clear instructions and this was very much open to interpretation. I played around on EQ8 for a while but couldn’t come up with anything as I wanted something a little different.
I came up with the idea of making a quilted version of the puzzles where the squares overlap and you have to identify how many squares the are. Anyway with some help from my husband, we came up with this.
Now as some of you know Eq8 allows you to design beautiful and complex quilts but it does not tell you how to construct them. I did however manage to make the quilt, but as happens quite often with me, I didn’t like the quilting so it never got finished.

I came across the quilt the other day and of course I can’t remember how I made it. So I will provide you with all the information that you get from EQ8 and these are the challenges:-
Make the quilt
Identify the 20 squares
We called the quilt “Ambiguity”. I pointed out earlier that the original challenge was open to interpretation, and also it will be interesting to see whether you agree that there are 20 squares or not and whether everyone comes up with the same 20 squares or more.
The next couple of weeks I will write further instructions so that anyone who is struggling but would like to make the quilt can have a go.
Tips
- You will achieve a better result using solids
- Pick your colours and depth of shade carefully if you want too achieve the image of transparency
The cutting instructions and other information can be found in my shop as a free download.
