Sampler quilts are a great way to learn a lot of different techniques and still end up with something useful rather than a random collection of blocks stuffed in a drawer (or a folder with notes if you are truly…

Wow those are gorgeous!
-
Thanks, Juliet! I’ve had fun dreaming up different ways to put blocks together so students feel they are getting something new if they return each year.
-
-
Some amazing ideas, particularly useful because I am in a group making charity quilts from sometimes donated orphan blocks.
-
Thank you, Teresa. Orphan blocks can be a challenge (and I have quite a few myself) but the settings can often bring quite different blocks (and colours) together.

Yours quilts are fabulous, I have never made a sampler style quilt and you have inspired me to have a go when I have time

Chris Franses wrote a new post, Skimpy seams 7 years, 2 months ago
That moment when you are pressing a quilt top – from the back – removing stray threads and preparing to layer it up for quilting . . . and you find a seam that is hanging on by a few threads. What to do? There’s no…

It’s always lovely to get fabric sent in the post to test and being a London girl, I suppose it was appropriate that the fabric I received were these London Town Fat Quarters from the Craft Cotton Co.
These…

What fun fabric and such an innovative use for them! Visiting relatives in Hannover in May, might need to make them a London based present as a memory of a great visit to London last year.
-
Sounds like the perfect plan. I’ve just done a passport wallet using some more of the fabric. Doing a blog post now 🙂

Chris Franses wrote a new post, Drafting, Making and Using Templates 7 years, 2 months ago
There are many reasons for needing to make templates for cutting shapes. Some shapes simply cannot be easily cut with a rotary cutter and although you can buy acrylic templates for many of these shapes it can get a…

Juliet Nice wrote a new post, My Grace frame is up! 7 years, 2 months ago
Isn’t it what every quilter wants, their own longarm and frame? It’s mostly a question of money and space, and I have very little of either but I am a determined little bunny, so here goes…

Love it…go Juliet.

My mum always said, “ Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” And you certainly prove that, Juliet. I can’t wait to see your work on it, so I really hope a machine comes up soon.
-
🙂 thank you, if I can wish it into working out I will!

So glad I’m not the only one using a Grace quilting frame for storage. I won’t show a photo just yet – I’ve got the wooden one which I set up 10 1/2 years ago in my sewing room, and it is heavy. One day I would love to have a dedicated long arm machine on it – I’ve used my Elna 7200 on it, but that means I would need to get the workshop machine out to use for piecing – doable but…! Anyway – well done, and one day maybe both of us will get round to quilting on our frames!
-
I love that we’re in the same boat!!!

-
I’d love to learn to long arm quilt my tops too. You were wise to get this when you could even though you don’t have a machine for it yet. I’m sure you’ll have one soon and look forward to hearing all about the journey. Good luck!

Awesome 🙂

The octagon and its tessellating square was a popular design in tiled floors as well as quilts – the kitchen floor in my last (Victorian) house had such a design with terracotta octagons and black squares. In Hannah…

Lovely gift Juliet and nice solution to a wonky panel.

Mum said she liked it. To be fair if I gave her a dead frog wearing a hat she’d still send me a thank you card of course… 😉

Juliet, I loved reading this, it really made me chuckle because I sometimes struggle to picture things in my head too.
Plus, I’m going to try your version of mitred corners, I think you might be onto something here!-
It was soooooo much easier to fake the mitre Ami, and it ends up exactly the same as if you’d done it the right way and ironed the seam allowance to one side anyway.

Great Wall hanging, and love your choice of weights during the blocking process

What an interesting post! The Bramble Patch have certainly had the pads of 12″ square paper for drafting in the last year or so, as they used to send them out for their BOM projects for us to cut our own EPP shapes.

Thank you , Karin. It’s good to know that the graph paper is probably still available – I only have a couple of sheets left!
