I am pleased to say that the foundation paper piecing (FPP) pattern for the UK Quilters United LOGO is now available to download for FREE in my shop. Two sizes are available, but do feel free to print at any scale and adjust seam allowances / sashing accordingly.

Choosing fabrics for a quilt is something that many people would like to do, but lack confidence for. They are not sure why the colours that looked good in the shop don’t seem to give the result they hoped f…

Excellent post Carolyn. This could do with being in the files of UKQU as a good-habit guide for beginners (or indeed anyone who has never had a good colour habit). ‘Thunderstorm’is spectacular!
-
Thanks Karin – I”ll look how to do that tomorrow. I have put it on my own website too.

-
Great article, so many helpful tips – thank you!
-
Thanks Amy – why not post some photos on the Facebook page if you do some successful experimenting?

This is so helpful Carolyn, it’s something I struggle with sometimes, especially when buying fabric. I end up with lots of beatiful unusual prints in gorgeous bright colours, then when I sit down to make something I find I have to get online and buy some plains. Thanks for writing such a comprehensive blog post on the topic .
-
Glad it was helpful Alison – we all know that tempting feeling in the shop! Hope you can look out for some fabrics to complement the eye candy next time.
-
I’ve just downloaded your free pdf summary for reference, thank you!
-
Hope it proves a useful reference for you. Why not post the results of your next test fabric shop on the Facebook group so we can all see the “colour and contrast?

I have only just seen this blog Carolyn, it’s a really helpful guide. I enjoy the challenge of finding the right fabric mix and your detailed explanation has enlightened me as to why some of my experiments don’t work! Thank you for an excelllent read.

Thanks Heather – glad it was helpful. I look forward to seeing the results in your next quilt!

I received your Cathedral Windows book this morning…it’s beautiful!! Can’t wait to make something xx

Wonderful Pam, glad to hear it arrived well. Looking forward seeing your creations on the UKQU facebook page!

The quilt police do exist, she came to our guild and told me my skills were seriously lacking for someone who had been quilting as long as i had and perhaps i should ask my husband to help more around the house and give me time to quilt more. She suggested at least 30 minutes every day and was shocked when i was not pleased with her statements. This definitely has taken some joy away from my quilting.

NO! What a seriously awful thing for anyone to say, Deb Quilter. That might be (just about) OK in the context of learning for a formal qualification where high standards are required, but is not at all appropriate for anyone quilting for enjoyment. I’m with Vendulka all the way on this issue.
-
Many people take their hobby very seriously. Thankfully the majority quilt for enjoyment, which is why the 20:20 rule should be practiced more
-
-
Dear @debquilter. What an awful thing to say to someone, sorry to hear about your experience! What that person should do is spent less time behind a sewing machine and more time around people practising being nice and human! I hope my article made you feel a little bit better and please take no notice of people like that, they are only projecting their own insecurities and it has nothing to do with you. If you are happy with your creations who are they to judge that! Enjoy and keep sewing!

Well said!
-
Hear, hear!! It really is all about what you want to make as a quilter and how you want to make it.
-
Cheered me up, thank you. Always worried about them police.

Beading a hobby I’m looking for the time to do! I already embellish bits a pieces with beads and have attended a Beading group a couple of times. Sadly time eludes me doing more however supplies and books are gathering ready for when I have the time.
-
Time is a problem isn’t it! I see so many things I want to do and, like you, I gather supplies and the time never comes. I did snatch a really nice hour this week when everyone was out and I added a beaded tassel to a gift bag. I had forgotten how much pleasure I get from this sort of thing – and it only took an hour so I was well pleased. . Thank you for reading Sharon.

-
Can’t wait for more. I love using beads on wall hangings and postcards so to learn more will be great.

Thank you Pat.

Having opened a shop on the website last night, I’m thrilled to see that I’ve already had a few downloads (after all the patterns are for free, and we all love that!). Looking in my Seller’s Dashboard, all of the orders are listed as ‘Processing’. Shouldn’t this automatically be set to Completed, Processed, Done or something similar? After all t…[Read more]

Fancy making your own UK Quilters United logo? Head over to my shop, where you can download the letters for free. Hopefully these’ll be useful if you’d like to appliqué our UKQU logo to your own makes. Two sizes are available. Paper piecing pattern is coming shortly (it’s being tested at the moment).
