Bless you Helen. I needed to wake up this morning to a happy place & a person sharing such positive thoughts about how it’s great to be eccentric & wonky!

Christine, it sounds as if you had a lovely day out with your friend and her daughter. So pleased you met Mo Jones in person, she does so much for UKQU in terms of the stand at that exhibition & the UKQU postcard swaps, & now the A4 mini quilts initiative will be really exciting. You are absolutely right though about trying other things. I was an…[Read more]

As always, a complete joy, to see things put so simply, to help you achieve something that looks so great!

Great article. I made a quilt from 4 orphan blocks from a friend, and then just added to it using scraps and corner stones & sashing strips, until I ran out of fabric, no real pattern in mind. Nice to know there was some method to my madness and it has a real name, rather than my name “Winging It”!

How wonderful of EQS, we are all so inspired to make this happen as volunteer makers, this is the icing on the cake!

One of my most favourite quilts that I have made, because of who received it. A woman I had never met but had heard a lot about. My friend Katie was personally driving a 7.5 Ton lorry with her friend Jill, as part of…

4 years faithful service. Thankfully not my sewing machine, but a severely scored cutting mat with a vertical great big open hole. RIP my 60 x 45cm (24 x 18″) OLFA green rotary cutting mat. So sorry you cracked u…

Love it.

Welcome to my bonkers parallel universe! I can assure you future blogs will get far worse xxx

Somehow I missed this when it came out. I have a pink Olfa and it is doing pretty well after 3-4 years. But I cut all over the place, sp that probably helps. A good lesson!

I adore red-work, I used to do it myself a long time ago, and have some antique German red-work in the loft somewhere. I must have a rummage! Nice to see it is making a comeback.

There are some beautiful things there, and the historical background is interesting, but my absolute favourite is the stained glass heart!

I was there Carol at the retreat, and I was complete amazed by the way you pulled all these disparate blocks together to such a vibrant wonderful conclusion. That quilt will certainly give a Quilty Hug to a care leaver & contribute to such a wonderful initiative.

Helen. I missed this when you first published it, so I am very pleased that on UKQU’s 5th Birthday you chose to share it again. Such a precious story! Beautiful quilt, combined with such thought & planning. Your award at Malvern was thoroughly deserved.

If you a Moda Addict, as I am, you may have bought at some point in the past a Moda Scrap Bag. I have bought a few in the past in local quilt shops. The only trouble is you can’t unwrap the roll when purchasing so y…

Just done something similar with 2 different scrap bags which sort of go together. Took out most of the floral strips and sewed the rest of the strips together. Some were quite wide strips and others fairly narrow. Total width about 31 inches. Need to press and cut into 3 strips. Then add sashing and borders to bring to correct size for another quilt for Christmas dinners. Surprising what we can make out of very little.
PS loved your write up. -
Ooo I didn’t know you get selvedges in them, that’s what I’d want out of it!

I love both your amazing pictures. Having done a charity project about 12 years ago for 3 weeks in a township in Clarens in the Golden Gate Highlands near Lesotho, they really brought back some amazing memories.

Have heard a lot about weighted quilts, have had friends ask me to make them, but the research about child weight to quilt weight was a step too far for my calculator & brain. I have heard it helps with SEN (Special Educational Needs) pupils, but was not prepared to endanger them (some of my friends children) by getting it wrong. So why is weight…[Read more]

Get well soon Denise, I fear the only thing I will be taking to hospital in August is my Kindle, but I have some fabric box kits that look fun with all the carboard bits cut out, so may cut some material pre-op so I can fiddle around with it while I am there … haven’t done one of those for over 20 years

Great blog … It’s not just about travel though, can also be when you are in hospital yourself or visiting someone who is there for a while …. I am cutting out material to go with a couple of unusual fabric box kits that have card frames as my sewing recovery therapy while I am in hospital

I love Laurel Burch designs which I first came across in San Francisco & San Diego in the v early 2000’s. I bought scarves, T shirts, greetings cards, calendars, mugs etc. I have acquired some vintage fabric pieces now, and more recently purchased some of the new lines being revived by her daughter.

Hello from Oxfordshire too Val … I saw a bag kit from Japan Crafts at a retreat made by a lovely lady there, fell in love with the fabrics and designs, so bought some kits too. Packing for my next retreat will be so much easier, just one shoe box of kits to take instead of the angst of deciding what to cut/make/do. I love your interpretation of…[Read more]

It was a double gift, initially to a dear local friend who was given the precious task of driving it there, and then her pride & pleasure in then presenting it to the recipients Mirlanda & Anika the baby.
