I was lucky enough to recently receive some Makower UK fabric to review and it was so cute with doggie prints and London scenes. I was given 12 squares that were just under 8 x 8” and there were 2 of each design. Four of the designs were directional, so I had to remember that when I was cutting.

They had pinked edges, which I usually hate because of the mess they make, but these did not seem to shed the way some pinked edges did. The fabric was good quality and not too thin so that I could not see through it. I liked that the fabrics had modern colours consisting of black, grey, cream and red and I decided that whatever I made I did not want to cut the fabrics too small as I wanted the cute prints to show up.
So, what should I make with these squares? When I lined them up, I wondered if there was enough fabric to make a Christmas placemat with a matching gift bag, only one way to find out, I guess…
I cut out the squares and stitched them in the design that I wanted, I used a single layer of wadding and lined the placemat in plain red. I used a neutral grey thread through, including the quilting.

I used another square a made a matching coaster for the Christmas placemat.
Next, was the gift bag to place the items into, I found a tutorial online that I liked and followed the instructions to make the bag, I adapted the measurements a little to make the bag a little larger. This too was lined in the same red as the placemat and coaster.

I had some strips left over so decided that I would make a little cutlery holder as part of the set. This drove me bonkers, I had to get Jack out 4 times before I finally stitched it correctly. It is all fully lined in plain red fabric.

I had a few different width strips left so I made a small double-sided napkin to complete the set.
Everything is fully washable, and it all fits tidily into the drawstring gift bag. I think any little person would be delighted to receive this as a Christmas present.

I was pleased and surprised at just how far 12 8inch squares can stretch!
So, in conclusion, I loved this fabric, it was a delight to sew with and did not slip around and hopefully you agree when I say that it would make some wonderful gifts at Christmas.
