These clever little rulers are used when you want to turn a fold over, be it on a hem of a garment or an edge of a quilt block. Hot Hemmers are made from nylon fibre board which is placed along the fold line, you then use the iron to press the fabric over the ruler. The fibre board allows the heat and steam to penetrate whilst also holding the position along the lines with total accuracy.

You can press the first section and then shift the ruler along easily for the next section as the ruler doesn’t hold the heat so is safe to move straight away. Strictly Quilting was sent the Hot Hemmer Square, which is marked with inch measurements, is perfect for making mitred corners, lining up Dresden Plate wedges and for geometric patchwork projects. Using the Hot Hemmer square for the wedges is very clever. Simple but clever. Points, aligned perfectly. The size is 6” square but as I said, it is easily moved along for larger blocks.

I had been wanting to try one of these for a time as I find that when I try and press over a hem, it can be difficult to keep an accurate straight line along with not burning your fingers! This is where the Hot Hemmer came in very useful.

The nylon fibre, that it is made of, almost grips the fabric so it doesn’t slip and slide whilst positioning. The ruler is a few millimetres thick which gives a good edge to fold against and, as I’ve said before, the fibre helps the heat and steam (if using) to really get a crisp fold. I haven’t tried it but I suspect if you used starch it would be even crisper.

This was easy to use and is certainly perfect for pressing a hem. I can’t count the number of times I’ve tried to press a hem accurately and it end up a little ‘wonky’. The Hot Hemmer ensures a perfect finish. I can imagine the Hot Ruler Large would be very handy when making larger items such as curtains.
