Have heard a lot about weighted quilts, have had friends ask me to make them, but the research about child weight to quilt weight was a step too far for my calculator & brain. I have heard it helps with SEN (Special Educational Needs) pupils, but was not prepared to endanger them (some of my friends children) by getting it wrong. So why is weight important, why is it soothing? I do the opposite in the winter, heavy down winter quilt goes on and I get pains in my feet, cramps in my legs, breathlessness, because of the weight, unable to cope with the weight, I throw the wretched thing off & get a towel from the bathroom as a blankie so I don’t freeze 🙁

Well put together Juliet. I would add that the cost of searching the fabrics after washing can prove to be expensive. My biggest difficulty is pressuring (ironing) the creases out after washing. I thought my iron was just for pressing my seams open

I was going to give the autumn swap a miss but I think I’m hooked. As a swap virgin this time I’ve learnt a lot about how to stalk and be stalked and also discovered new techniques and fabrics that I’ve come to love. Bring it on ❤️❤️❤️

How true…make it at the same time or it never gets made. My liberty butterfly is still not made but it’s on my to do list

Beautiful quilts. I prefer the darker version as well but would happily live with either. I missed the swap this year due to bring overcommitted but have loved all the ones I have recieved. I too wish I’d made 2 of the ones I’ve sent out as I’ve never got around to making one for myself !

I love your quilts but prefer the darker one with the more defined outline. I wish I’d made myself the first mini I did . It was a butterfly by lillyella stitchery , you have inspired me to make it for myself

Lovely blog Juliet. I’ve done all four swaps, and made a few Angel minis, but each one has its own special memories. Each mini is a unique gift. We all appreciate the time and thoughtful that has gone into making what we receive.

I love Laurel Burch designs which I first came across in San Francisco & San Diego in the v early 2000’s. I bought scarves, T shirts, greetings cards, calendars, mugs etc. I have acquired some vintage fabric pieces now, and more recently purchased some of the new lines being revived by her daughter.

Amazing designer and artist, and one I’d never heard of before. Thank you for introducing her to us, and so glad her designs will be being produced again.

I wasn’t a fan, purely because I didn’t know of her; but I am now, thank you!

I love Laurels cat designs. I’ve got one of her handbags and was lucky enough to find a fabric panel in the charity shop earlier this year.

I get downhearted when I see lovely quilts and imagine everyone is getting them right first time (unlike me!). Thanks for sharing Juliet. Lovely quilt you have there; even if not quite finished yet.

A really interesting read and you can’t beat a good flange .. I am rapidly being converted to the idea of a kit, apart from the fear of cutting it wrong! Abbie Searle’s Mystery Quilt will be dispatched soon so I am looking forward to that .. but cutting the fabric will be a big thing for me. What tips would you suggest to avoid anxiety of that, apart from a large glass of vodka?

Very comforting to know that I am not the only one to get things upside down, inside out, and back to front, some [most] days! Lol ! I reckon that your beautiful black and white butterfly quilt is going to look amazing once finished. How about some regular straight-line quilting to hold it all together, and then go back for some FMQ another time (in a few days/weeks/months) aaannnddd, meanwhile, your mini-flange-demo-quilt (and thank you for that too btw, brilliant) might be the perfect playground for practising your FMQ too – yay hey, win win x
